What is a Deep Plane Facelift

Facelift techniques have evolved significantly leading to safer, more natural, and longer-lasting results. A deep plane facelift achieves this by repositioning the deeper structures of the face to lift what has fallen and restore natural volume. The results are natural without looking pulled or overdone.

Who is a candidate for a deep plane facelift?

Most patients who are candidates for a facelift are also candidates for a deep plane facelift. During your consultation, Dr. Fisher will thoroughly assess your face as well as your goals and medical history to determine which technique is best for you. No two patients are the same, and your facelift will be tailored to your needs and desires.

What are the benefits of a deep plane facelift?

  • Delivers a long-lasting, natural result
  • Avoids a pulled, done look
  • Restores natural fullness to the cheeks
  • Lifts sunken jowls
  • Tightens the neck
  • Leaves imperceptible scars hidden around the ears.

How is the procedure performed?

A deep plane facelift involves incisions hidden around the ears. The deep tissues can then be repositioned as a single unit to achieve a natural look that addresses signs of aging in the cheeks, jawline, and neck.

Other facelift techniques do not release the facial ligaments, thus limiting the result.

Dr. Fisher releases the zygomatic ligaments in the cheeks, which elevates the midface and reduces the appearance of nasolabial folds. This eliminates the need for dermal fillers, cheek implants, or fat grafting. He then focuses on the masseteric and mandibular ligaments, releasing them to lift the jowls and improve contours in the jawline. Lastly, by releasing the cervical retaining ligaments, Dr. Fisher is able to restore the neck and decrease the appearance of platysmal bands.

As this technique focuses primarily on lifting in a natural anatomic plane, there is never tension on the skin. The deep plane facelift is highly effective at lifting and tightening the face without affecting the superficial layers of skin. As a result, patients achieve better results, with less bruising and faster recovery.

What is the recovery period like?

Following the procedure, you will be taken home or to an area hotel by one of our dedicated facelift recovery nurses who will be with you for the first night. Light cotton dressings are applied to the treatment sites and kept on for the first 24 hours. Patients are provided with prescription pain medications to ensure they are comfortable during the first few days of recovery, although many patients do not require anything stronger than Tylenol. Patients can usually return to work or social activities in 2-3 weeks, but must wait 4-6 weeks before engaging in any strenuous activity.

FAQ

How long do the results last?

Is the deep plane approach more painful than other facelift techniques?

Is the recovery process from a deep plane facelift longer than a traditional facelift?

Can a deep plane facelift be incorporated into a revision procedure?

Why does a deep plane facelift cost more than other types of facelifts?

Can a deep plane facelift be combined with other treatments?

How long do the results last?

The results of a deep plane facelift are generally long-lasting. Most patients don’t need a revision for at least 10 to 15 years.

Is the deep plane approach more painful than other facelift techniques?

No. On the contrary, deep plane facelifts are considered to be less painful as the skin is unaffected. The skin holds far more nerves than the underlying musculature.

Is the recovery process from a deep plane facelift longer than a traditional facelift?

Quite the opposite. Patients who undergo a deep plane facelift have less bruising and can return to social activities faster than those who have a facelift performed using older techniques.

Can a deep plane facelift be incorporated into a revision procedure?

Yes. Undergoing a revision treatment is a great opportunity to try out the deep plane technique. In all likelihood, the initial treatment was a traditional facelift that may have pulled the skin too tightly, and these effects can be reversed with the deep plane technique.

Why does a deep plane facelift cost more than other types of facelifts?

As a more complex procedure that involves more advanced surgical techniques, a deep plane facelift naturally comes at a higher cost. When considering surgery, patients should always keep in mind that quality matters much more than any other factor. Plus, one must remember that getting the procedure done right the first time will save patients a lot of time and money on follow-up treatments in the future.

Can a deep plane facelift be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Procedures such as a brow lift, blepharoplasty, or neck rejuvenation can all be performed in tandem with a deep plane facelift. Dr. Fisher will provide more information on these options during the private consultation.
